THE VALUE OF MOTHERS

  After God made man and saw he was incomplete being alone (Gen. 1:26; 2:7,18), he created from the male, a female, to be his wife and companion (Gen. 2:21-25). She would not only become the mother of their children (Gen. 4:1-2,25; 5:4), but also the mother of all mankind. “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living” (Gen. 3:20). According to this divine decree of husband and wife becoming fathers and mothers by bearing children has all subsequent human life came into being and by which it continues to exist (Gen. 1:27-28). Mothers may have the most vital role of our existence besides God. Her task of bearing children is not an easy one. “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children…” (Gen. 3:16). Many women have lost their lives in the process of their travail such as it was with Rachel and Phinehas’ wife (Gen. 35:16-19; 1 Sam. 4:19-20).

    Women understand the danger and are still compelled to have children. Who can understand why they do it, except women themselves? Speaking from a male’s perspective, I certainly cannot comprehend it. I believe if I were a woman I would never have children. Not in a million years. Never would I go through such an arduous ordeal as of nine months of pregnancy with the ups and downs of body and hormone changes and a living being daily expanding within. Neither does pregnancy come with a guarantee that I and my baby will even make it. And this is just the beginning of motherhood. Mothers should be honored. Mother’s Day is legitimate. I understand that not all mothers are the mothers they should be. But generally speaking, I believe we can all agree that most give it their best effort. And by the way, there are tons of women who have never conceived or bore children who are able to stand on equal ground with the best mothers of the world. They have earned the right to be called “Mama.” These endearing loving souls have taken other people’s children and raised them as their very own. They too should be praised in every sense of the term “mother.”

    With this said, men and women were not created to live life apart from God. On a mother’s best day she is in a hopeless state of inadequacy trying to rear children without God’s wisdom and blessings. All women should become faithful Christians so their faith in the Lord will also be taught and evident in their children (2 Tim. 1:5; 3:14-15). The next time you consider the value of mothers consider the fact that without them we would not exist on earth and have no hope of existing in heaven. Our Lord came into the world through a mother and without a mother we would have no Savior (Matt. 1:23-25: Luke 1:30-35; Gal. 4:4).
