From The Desk of:

The Restorer of My Soul

God restores us in response to our actions and what has happened in this life that is out of our control. These actions create distance between us and the Good Shepherd of our soul.

As He leads, He leads us to still waters of rest (Psalm 23:3). As a member of the flock, I do not know where these waters of rest are. But I know I have been led to rest repeatedly; therefore, I follow.

Our shepherd leads from ahead and not from behind. In Scripture, you read of God not only walking with His people but also going ahead of them by leading (Deut. 31:8; Isa. 45:2; Psalm 139:5; Exo. 23:20). God’s goal is to lead us and not drive us away. We can trust that he has gone ahead. Distractions, sin, and the enemy come from behind to separate us from God.

When we need restoration, it can be seen and felt. I hear people say they feel far away from God. I encourage you to remember what it is like to be close to Him. Don’t stay separated for so long that you forget that feeling and no longer seek restoration, renewal, rejuvenation, and refreshment.

As the shepherd leads, he watches his flock because sheep are notorious for two dangerous behaviors that leave them vulnerable to predators: wandering away from the flock and shepherd (distractions) and being cast down. When cast down, a sheep falls on its back and cannot get up on its own due to its weight and body makeup. Both situations should prompt the sheep to cry out to the shepherd.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and He will always leave the ninety-nine and find the one who has gone astray (Matthew 18:12-14) and is cast down. Once He locates us, will He find a sheep that is ready to be restored or a rebellious sheep that no longer wants to be in His flock?

Those who are restored know the terror of being lost and the joy of being found. We know the uneasiness of being away from God and His people and the comforts of home.  Psalm 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”
