Open My Eyes
The Psalmist said, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law. I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me” (Psalms 119:18-19). The inspired writer spoke of the need to see something wondrous or extraordinary from God’s Word. Spectacular and wondrously barely describe what we gain from reading Scripture.
We need our eyes to be opened because we are all foreigners. Without God’s counsel, you and I would be lost. What do we know about this world? Whom do we know? God’s word serves as a guide to live our lives and a compass that helps us navigate ourselves in an unknown world. The next few moments, tomorrow and the future, are unknown. As you read the Word of God, the unfamiliar becomes familiar. “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
The stranger is more prone to receive mistreatment for being a foreigner. “You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 22:21). God wanted his people to remember how they were mistreated in Egypt. He wanted their eyes to be open to that and never project that kind of learned behavior. As a stranger to this world, the earth, our bodies, the world, and everything in it will not fully cooperate because your spirit is not a part of it. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (John 15:19).
As a stranger, God’s word will inspire you to remember that you have a home someplace else. A word from the Lord helps us with each passing day. As the world gives you its worst, God always gives you, His best. Extraordinary and beautiful things God will continue to show you while you are a stranger to let you know that being a stranger to this world is not that bad; it has always been His will. He never intended for us to get too comfortable.
May God open your eyes to His wonderful truths so that we can all have a Christ-centered vision.
